We are pleased to report that we’ve had a landmark year of successful performances and outreach programs.  We would like to share with you some highlights of our season.  In summary:

  • Tulsa Ballet celebrated its 50th anniversary; not many arts organizations can boast this length of history

  • We proudly presented an international company of 30 professional dancers, representing fourteen different countries from every part of the world, as well as a pre-professional ensemble of ten dancers from ten different states, all 40 of whom call Tulsa their home

  • We delighted audiences and wowed critics with five outstanding productions, including two world premieres and two Oklahoma premieres

  • We performed four times in our state capital this year and are returning next year to present our first ever season performance subscription in Oklahoma City

  • We toured to three different venues in Europe, including the prestigious, invitation-only Belgrade Dance Festival

  • In February, Governor Brad Henry declared Tulsa Ballet a state cultural ambassador; the first arts organization in Oklahoma to receive this honor

  • We grew our Center for Dance Education enrollment more than five-fold since its inception four years ago

  • We touched the lives of 5,000 young people in Tulsa alone through our free outreach programs this year

We’ve had a truly remarkable 50th anniversary season!   Our upcoming season, entitled The Classics in Black and White with a Touch of Red, promises to deliver pleasing array of classical ballets, including Michael Smuin’s Emmy Award-winning version of Romeo and Juliet, Jerome Robbins’ The Concert and the state premieres of Andre Prokovsky’s The Great Gatsby and Hans van Manen’s Black Cake.  In addition to these established favorites, the artists of Tulsa Ballet will perform an unprecedented four world premieres next year, including the works of Luciano Cannito, Ma Cong, Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo.

We are also pleased to continue growing our education and outreach programs.  Over the last several years, we have developed a number of educational programs for students in area schools.  These programs are primarily aimed at schools with a high percentage of students on the free or reduced price lunch program, and are intended to replace or supplement the arts and physical education which has been cut from school curriculums due to budget constraints.

Leaps Ahead, an in-studio, 45 minute ballet class for elementary school students has been very popular in our community.  We continued this program for the third year, serving three different Tulsa Public Schools on site.  A new program implemented this year is Leaps in Motion, a “traveling” version of Leaps Ahead.  Since some schools are not in close proximity to our studios, they expressed an interest in us bringing our program to them.  Next year, a total of five Tulsa Public Schools will participate in Leaps in Motion throughout the school year.  These students all receive an invaluable gift through participating; a hearty appreciation for dance that can only come from experiencing it themselves.

Journey through Dance, a performance program for elementary through high school students, is a dynamic history lesson that illustrates the art and history of dance.  Ten public schools in the Tulsa area attended Journey through dance programs this year.
In the fall of 2007, Tulsa Ballet will launch a new outreach initiative that further supplements the eroding arts education programs in Oklahoma’s public schools: student matinee performances of Romeo and Juliet and The Great Gatsby in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa.  These two educational matinee performances will be excellent tools to engage students in the learning process.   Both famous pieces of literature are required reading for middle school or high school students, so the presentations will fit seamlessly into the existing curriculum.  Each program will consist of excerpts from the ballet, which will be performed by Tulsa Ballet’s professional company.  A narrator, dressed in period costume, will describe the scene and story context for the students.
As you can see, Tulsa Ballet continues to provide the community with performances and outreach programs of the highest caliber.  Our success is made possible by the generous support of the individuals, foundations and corporations who believe in the mission of Tulsa Ballet.  Without this support, we could not possibly provide the Tulsa community with the world class performances and outreach programs they’ve come to expect.  We ask that you consider supporting Tulsa Ballet with a gift for our organization’s operations.  Your gift will help insure a successful future for Tulsa Ballet.  For more information about how you can support Tulsa Ballet, please contact Amy Miller, Director of Development at (918) 749-6030, extension 233, or amy.miller@tulsaballet.org.
