TULSA BALLET CELEBRATES THE CYGNET SOCIETY AT A BALLET RUSSES EVENING

TULSA, Okla. – March 26, 2012 – Tulsa Ballet celebrates the graduation of the 2011 – 2012 Cygnet Society on Sunday, April 1st through a presentation before the 3:00pm performance of A Ballets Russes Evening. The 32 young ladies grace the Tulsa Performing Arts Center after one year of fun-filled activities from creating new friendships, learning more about ballet to giving back to the community.

The Cygnet Society of Tulsa Ballet is an educational outreach program for eighth grade girls. The name was inspired by one of nature's most elegant creatures and ballet's most traditional symbol – the Swan. Young swans are officially called cygnets. Within a year or so of their birth, the downy gray cygnet is transformed into a majestic bird renowned for its breathtaking beauty and grace.

This year, the Cygnets enjoyed seeing the Oklahoma premiere of Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow during the fall portion of the season as well as meeting company dancers and taking a ballet class from Tulsa Ballet’s Ballet Mistress Susan Frei. The young ladies also enjoyed taking a hip-hop class.

During the holiday season, the Cygnets were given the opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering at Hope for the Holidays. Hope for the Holidays is an evening performance of the first The Nutcracker of the season given to more than 2,000 social service clients and non-profits agencies. The Cygnets passed out cookies and juice to all of the special guests.

In February, the Cygnets and their fathers were treated to a special dinner and performance evening – Ballet & BBQ. After a finger-licking BBQ dinner, the fathers and daughters received a backstage tour of the PAC before watching the world premiere of Edwaard Liang’s Romeo and Juliet.

Later in the spring, the Cygnets learned about costume construction at an exclusive tout of Tulsa Ballet’s Wardrobe Department followed by a makeup class. The parents of the Cygnets received a special invitation to join Tulsa Ballet’s Founders Society at a Studio K Preview and Dinner.

Tulsa Ballet is now accepting applications for The Cygnet Society Class of 2013. Applications must be returned to Tulsa Ballet by May 15, 2012. The program is open to all young ladies entering eighth grade in the fall of 2012. Program size is limited.
